Grad Lab Computing Resources

Lab systems running RedHat GNU/Linux

Any grad student in our department can log into these systems. Most are not suited for background jobs or for heavy-duty foreground jobs. Nonetheless, in addition to the special-purpose machines chivo1 through chivo4 (see below), grad students sometimes need to run stuff in the background on machines that people sit in front of. Before you ever attempt to put stuff on another machine or in the background of your machine, be sure to know how to use tools like screen, nice, top, renice, kill, and nohup. In addition, you may want to learn about VNC.

These systems are not for performing computations. Use them to access your files, create ssh tunnels, print things, maintain your website, and so on.
