How to configure your e-mail client
The “basic facts” on how to configure your mail client are
given here. In many mail clients, you specify the configuration using
either “Preferences” or “Account Settings”
or “Advanced Settings”, often by starting in the Edit
or Tools menu. (At the bottom of this page we have some screenshots
for certain specific mail clients.)
Settings Overview:
Incoming mail (IMAP) server: imap.math.arizona.edu
- Your mail client might default to using POP. Be sure to instead configure it to use IMAP. (With IMAP you can see all your mail folders, and you will see the same mail at work and at home.)
- To encrypt your connection, instruct your mail client to use TLS on port 143.†
- If your client doesn't support TLS, you may instead use SSL on port 993.†
- Do not enable SASL (also called “secure authentication”).‡
If your mail client forces you to choose a specific authentication type, you want to use “PLAIN” or “LOGIN” or “PASSWORD”.
Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: smtp.math.arizona.edu
- To encrypt your connection, instruct your mail client to use TLS on port 587.†
- Your mail client may default to using TLS on port 25. Be sure to change the port to 587.
- If your client doesn't support TLS, you may instead use SSL on port 465.†
- You must also instruct your client to submit your network account username, and this must match the From: address in your e-mails.
- Do not enable SASL (also called “secure authentication”).‡
If your mail client forces you to choose a specific authentication type, you want to use “PLAIN” or “PASSWORD”.
Notes
- (†) All our security certificates are self-signed. Your mail client may warn you about that. Many mail clients will allow you to “permanently accept” or “install” the certificate, so that the warning does not reappear.
- (‡) Since TLS/SSL already encrypts your entire connection, it is unnecessary (and indeed unsupported) to separately protect your password using SASL.
IMAP Folder Names
If your IMAP client allows you to customize the folder names,
using the following settings (used by a majority
of e-mail systems and e-mail clients) will give you the least hassles.
Note that these settings are case-sensitive.
- Deleted-messages folder name: Trash
- Sent-mail folder name: Sent
- Spam folder name: Junk
- Drafts folder name: Drafts
- Templates folder name: Templates
Advanced IMAP Settings
Your mail client's default settings will probably work, but if not,
check these more advanced settings:
- Do not specify a “folder prefix” or “server prefix”.
- Disable folder subscriptions (i.e., turn off “show only subscribed folders”). You want to see all your mail folders!
- Do not make use of namespaces.
