New Account Information
Hi, and welcome to the math department! You're probably looking at this page
because you received a message from us informing you
that your network account
has been set up.
Our department communicates mostly by e-mail. That's why we'd like you to
follow the instructions below: we want you to get your e-mail!
But we realize not everyone is comfortable working
with unfamiliar computer systems—if you run into difficulty,
please ask us for help.
Your network account is good for a variety of things: it stores e-mail,
lets you publish a personal website, and gives you access to our
scientific software.
- If you don't want a network account at all, let us know. You
will have to have an e-mail account somewhere else, and you must
tell us that address. For administrative purposes, we will still assign
the @math.arizona.edu address to you, but all incoming mail
will simply get forwarded to your other address. You can then
ignore the rest of this page.
- Before you do anything else, you'll probably want to
change your password.
- You'll want to know how to
access your e-mail. To temporarily forward your mail elsewhere,
please see our e-mail
FAQs.
- You'll probably want to
transfer existing files to your new account.
- You might want to put together a personal website.
- But as you start putting things in your account, please be aware that
each account has a quota. You can
check your quota.
Be sure to keep an eye on it, as you'll run into difficulty when the
account fills up: incoming e-mail will be rejected, and you might even
be unable to log in at all.
- Finally, to use our scientific software, you'll find it
easiest to do so sitting physically in front of a computer here, but
if you're feeling adventurous, you can establish a
graphical
remote desktop connection to your account. You can also accomplish
a lot of things using a text-only remote shell connection.
- Be aware of general
university-wide computing policies regarding your use of e-mail
and accounts on university-owned systems, which includes your
math department e-mail and math department network account.
- If you have a computer at home,
you may want to know about
free dial-up internet
access. If you carry your personal computing equipment to the
department, you'll want to know
how to register it
for use on our network, and you may want to know
about building
wireless network access.
- Now you're on your own. Please read through
the various pages in this computer support website. Best of luck!
